Employment Visa vs Business Visa in Bahrain: What’s the Difference?

A visitor arrives in Bahrain for meetings and finds a project ready to begin. Can work start on a business visa? No. A business visa supports a temporary commercial visit. Paid employment requires a valid Bahrain Employment Visa, along with the necessary work and residence approvals.

Difference between Employment Visa and Business Visa in Bahrain

A Bahrain Employment Visa allows a foreign national to live and work for an approved employer. A business visa is meant for short activities such as meetings, negotiations, conferences, exhibitions and discussions with clients or partners. It does not give the visitor permission to take a job or perform regular employee duties.

Bahrain’s official guidance states that an employer must obtain a valid work permit and residence visa for a foreign employee. LMRA describes its new permit service as an employer-led application for expatriates hired under the employer’s commercial registration.

Who Needs an Employment Visa in Bahrain?

You need a Bahrain Employment Visa if a company hires you for an ongoing position and you will perform paid duties in Bahrain. This applies across offices, shops, hotels, clinics, construction sites and other authorised workplaces.

A business visitor may explore an opportunity, negotiate an agreement or attend an industry event. However, the visitor should not join payroll, manage daily operations or begin an assigned job. Choosing the wrong category can delay onboarding and create compliance problems.

Bahrain Employment Visa Requirements

Usually, it starts with a real job offer and an eligible employer to sponsor the position. The employer must apply for the work permit with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority before the commencement of the employment relationship. Commonly used supporting papers include:

  • A valid passport copy
  • Employment and proposed occupation details
  • A medical examination report from an accepted facility
  • Qualification certificates or professional approval for regulated roles
  • Employer records linked to the commercial registration
  • Extra papers requested for the applicant’s nationality or occupation

LMRA’s current information identifies an overseas medical report as a required document. Certain specialised occupations may also require evidence of qualifications or approval from the relevant authority.
